Zhang Yiming is a Chinese Internet entrepreneur best known for founding ByteDance in 2012. He developed the highly successful news aggregator Toutiao and the global video sharing platform Douyin, internationally known as TikTok. His ventures propelled him to become one of the world's wealthiest individuals.

Biography

Born in 1983, Zhang Yiming is a Chinese Internet entrepreneur and technologist. He graduated from Nankai University in 2005 with a degree in software engineering. After working at Kuxun, a travel website acquired by Expedia, and founding Fanfou, a Twitter-like service, Zhang Yiming established ByteDance in 2012. His vision for ByteDance was to leverage artificial intelligence to personalize information delivery. This led to the creation of Jinri Toutiao (Toutiao), a news and information content platform launched in August 2012, which rapidly gained immense popularity in China due to its sophisticated recommendation algorithms. Building on this success, ByteDance launched Douyin (known globally as TikTok) in September 2016. TikTok's short-form video format and highly engaging algorithmic feed led to an unprecedented global user acquisition, making it one of the most downloaded applications worldwide. The surging global popularity of TikTok made Zhang the richest man in China in 2024. As of May 2025, his net worth was estimated by Forbes at US$65.5 billion. On November 4, 2021, Zhang stepped down as CEO of ByteDance, completing a leadership handover announced in May 2021, though he maintains significant influence, holding over 50 percent of ByteDance's voting rights.
